Isn't it time for you to play?
Dear Bocce People:
I hope this message finds you all healthy and safe and feeling not too cabin-feverish.
It is with a heavy heart (and a sound mind) that I announce the cancellation of the 2020 North American Linear Bocce Championships that had been scheduled for May 2, 2020.
While the North Americans are an important — some would say vital — part of American culture, public health is even more important, more vital.
So stay home when you can, stay healthy, practice linear bocce in your driveway, and be ready for the World Championships in October. Mark your calendars.
Details to come re: that major event.
Re: the Covid 19, I’d like to think that at least two good things might come of it:
1) With all the big-time sports cancelled, perhaps people may find other things to do instead of just sitting and watching vicariously while other people play baseball and football and so on. Perhaps they’ll start playing sports themselves. An active life is a happy life. (That much is obvious to the kind of people who vie for major Linear Bocce titles, but I liked the sentence and so left it in).
2) Lately science has taken a beating, with many people in high authority distrusting it, not putting much store in it. It would be a cruel lesson but it’s possible this awful virus that knows no politics could reverse such misplaced distrust and lead us back to a more enlightened understanding of the physical world.
One can hope.
Meantime spring is here, and I think it’s the best time of year (next to fall). I hope y’all enjoy it by getting outdoors, going for runs or walks or doing whatever.
Wear your face masks.
What a great community of people this is, and I’m so glad to be a part of it. See you in October.
